Below is a brief interview with Jillion.
Why CCIH?
I was first introduced to CCIH through the workshop on working with suicidal ideation. The way they discussed approaching clients in a relational and collaborative way was unique from other trainings I had on the topic. The consideration towards the client’s AND the therapist’s experience, which is often overlooked, while also incorporating anti-oppressive, community based interventions, offered me a sense of empowerment unlike before in navigating such a challenging situation with a client.
After attending various other workshops and participating in Year 1 of the Advanced Clinical Training program, I have grown an immense respect for how CCIH approaches the therapeutic process and emphasizes the importance of recognizing shared humanity in the healing space. In navigating what would be the best setting for me to continue to evolve in my career, I was very hopeful for the chance to become involved in the CCIH community and am excited to begin this journey!
What initially got you interested in therapy?
I have navigated my own mental health and participated in therapy at various points in my life. That journey has shown me how powerful and healing vulnerable, safe, and genuine human connection can be. As a teenager starting my efforts towards mental health advocacy and suicide awareness, I wanted to take it a step further and professionally engage in that process with others, thus leading me to begin the process of becoming a therapist.
What do you look forward to learning about at CCIH?
I am looking forward to growing my knowledge of the neurobiological processes that underlie a person’s experience of trauma as I’ve found learning about the the things we don’t always understand to be very validating to a complex and challenging experience. Learning more about dissociation, parts work, and somatic incorporation are also concepts that intrigue me.
What do you like to do when you are not in session?
In my free time, if I’m looking for a laid back experience, I enjoy spending time with family and friends, playing Super Smash Bros., Mario Kart, and the Sims, watching anime (Jujutsu Kaisen being my favorite!) or some thriller/horror/fantasy based movie/show. I’m trying to reconnect to reading books, the Alchemist right now, and take moments to detach from screens and social media (even though I do enjoy a good meme and funny video). If you catch me outside, I love trying new restaurants, going to the movies, bowling, or attending a concert where I can dance!
