Couples come to us struggling with patterns that they have been “practicing” for months, years – sometimes decades!  These patterns can be experienced as conflict, communication difficulties, trouble connecting and more. Histories of trauma in one or both partners create layers of experience that are complex and nuanced. They require therapists to have a framework for understanding and facilitating work with both the spoken and the unspoken in the room.

Just as in trauma-informed individual therapy, in relationship work we privilege regulation in both the individual experiences in the room as well as in the relationship dynamic between partners. Using a phase oriented treatment, we hold a frame that helps folks find stability and increased safety in their relationships, in order to create lasting change.

In our time together, we will use our understanding of the neurobiology of attachment and trauma to create a framework for working with couples. This workshop will include theory, experiential practice with intervention, and case study.

In this workshop we will:

  1. Use trauma theory and attachment theory as well as a parts model and the window of tolerance to explore building a collaborative frame that focuses on the “relationship as client” being treated in the room.
  2. Study and explore experiential strategies for assessment and intervention with folks who also have a history of trauma.
  3. Use case examples to demonstrate interventions with couples that privilege regulation and presence as access routes to change in relational dynamics.
