Good enough therapists keep in mind that it is much less about what they do for patients than how they are with them.

Complex trauma and dissociation present some of the most difficult challenges we face as therapists.  It requires us to focus not only on how to conceptualize and treat dissociation but on how to be with patients who experience themselves as many instead of one.  In this highly interactive workshop we will explore ways to increase therapeutic effectiveness with chronic shame and resistance in the context of complex trauma and dissociation. Dissociative parts often engage in defenses that interact internally to maintain chronic, acutely painful shame. We will learn how to work with those who struggle with dissociation as a whole, instead of focusing on changing "difficult" or "resistant" parts.

Kathy Steele, MN, CS, is an internationally recognized leader in the theory and treatment of complex trauma and dissociation. Kathy has (co)authored numerous book chapters, beer-reviewed journal articles, and three foundational books with her colleagues including the recently published Treating Trauma-Related Dissociation: A Practical, Integrative Approach. Kathy is known for her humor, compassion, respect, and depth of knowledge as a clinician and teacher, and for her capacity to complex issues in easily understood and clear ways. She is sought as a consultant and supervisor, and as an international lecturer on topics related to trauma, dissociation, attachment, and psychotherapy.
