Whether they specialize in it or not, all therapists will encounter complex trauma (CPTSD) and dissociation in their practice.
Dissociation is a highly creative and adaptive coping strategy in an environment that is dangerous and chaotic. In the face of trauma, we employ the protective strategy of trying to “unknow” that which is too terrifying to integrate. When therapists encounter dissociation in the therapy space we may feel disoriented, confused, or deskilled.
In this interactive workshop, we will work together to take the mystery out of assessing, diagnosing and treating dissociation and complex trauma. We will explore all this complexity together, from both from a theoretical perspective and a sense of what it is like to be on the journey with someone for whom trauma has shaped their experience of the world.
In this workshop we will:
- Understand Dissociation as a protective strategy for traumatic wounding
- Identify the clinical skills and personal resources needed to treat complex trauma and dissociation
- Discuss working with attachment wounding and how it shows up in the therapeutic relationship
- Learn present centered approaches to working with dissociated parts of experience
