Creating a Space for Queer Clinicians

Being a Queer person is about more than sexuality. In addition to an expression of identity, Queerness is a political ideology, a set of values, and a lens through which to view the world. It is rich, expansive and nuanced. I am so proud to be Queer, and I feel such love for and kinship with other Queer folks.

The experience of being a Queer therapist is as nuanced as Queer identities themselves, and I believe that we, as a community of Queer clinicians in Chicago, need our own designated spaces in which to connect with one another and to build networks of care and support: we work better together.

This Fall, I’ll be starting a consultation group for Queer clinicians at CCIH. I hope it will be a place for us to come together and discuss the unique challenges, as well as the unique joys, of practicing psychotherapy as Queer clinicians. I invite participants to bring their client cases to discuss in the group, where we will practice holding our clients’ experiences in community.

In addition to discussing cases, we will share skills and resources, and explore questions such as:

  • What does it mean to practice through a Queer- and Trans-affirming lens?
  • How can we care for ourselves as we do this work? How can we care for each other?
  • How do we bring ourselves as Queer into our work with clients?

Our co-created group ethic will reflect our shared values of trauma-informed, anti-oppressive, Queer- and Trans-affirming care.I am so excited to offer this group space and I hope that you will join me in co-creating it! See you in November.

This group will meet on first Wednesdays from 11:00am-12:30pm at CCIH starting November 6, 2024. The fee for each meeting will be $80, which will include CEUs for attendance. We have space for up to 10 participants.

If you are a Queer identified clinician with an existing caseload and are interested on joining this group, reach out to Victoria, CCIH’s practice manager, at officemanager@theccih.com or by phone at 773-754-7441 ext 2500.
