Pat Ogden, PhD

"When the spoken word fails, the body dynamically communicates."

The dramatic advances in neuroscience over the past decades have led to important insights into how the mind, brain, and body process experiences. We now know that an exclusive reliance on the "talking cure" may limit clinical efficacy. Mindful awareness of moment-by-moment experience clearly reveal the internal patterns of organizations that underlie clients' current difficulties.

Several psycho-therapeutic methods have been developed that teach mindfulness through structured exercises, solitary practices, and sets of specific skills. However, in Sensorimotor Psychotherapy, mindfulness is embedded with the moment-to-moment experience between therapist and client. Embedded relational mindfulness is used to activate clients' present moment experience of attachment failure, unresolved trauma, and experiential connectedness with the therapist. This simultaneous evocation of the effects of past wounds and social engagement between the therapist and client, combined with attention to the body as a primary source of therapeutic actions can inspire healing.
